Random Team Generator

Split a list of names into balanced, random teams.

0 names
Teams appear hereAdd names, then press Generate Teams.

How it works

Add one name per line, choose how many teams you want, and press Generate Teams. Names are shuffled and dealt out in turn, so team sizes never differ by more than one.

Not happy with the split? Shuffle Again gives you a fresh set of teams from the same names. Copy puts every team on your clipboard as plain text.

If the numbers do not add up — say six teams from four names — the tool tells you exactly what to change.

People use it for

  • Splitting a class into groups for a project
  • Making fair sides for five-a-side or pickup games
  • Pairing colleagues for a workshop
  • Dividing a party into teams for a quiz

Questions

How are the teams balanced?

Names are shuffled and then dealt one at a time to each team, like cards. Every team gets the same number of people, give or take one.

Can I make teams of a fixed size instead?

Yes — use the Random Group Generator, which asks for people per group rather than the number of teams.

Are the names saved?

No. Only your chosen number of teams is remembered on this device; the names are never stored or sent anywhere.

What is the maximum number of teams?

Fifty, and never more than the number of names you entered.
